Slam Poetry, which is spoken word poetry that is performed in a fun but competitive atmosphere, is a class that is offered here at GIA. However, one does not need to be an official Student of Slam in order to participate in the Grande Annual GIA Slam!
Roughly 15 poets got up on stage to strut their stuff, bravely submitting their spoken art to be judged by critics with score cards. The judges were, in turn, judged harshly by the crowd, which was wildly supportive of everyone who participated.
Poets have 3 minutes to perform their piece, and while the use of musical accompaniment is not allowed, bursting into song half-way through a poem is permitted, and welcome!
The work performed at the Annual Slam ran a full gamut of styles of topics, and each artist was encouraged to find an utilize their personal flair to get their point across. Along with the art of building community, learning how to express one's self is an skill that is highly valued at the Institute.
