What will life be like at GIA?
Here's our Daily Schedule:
7:30 AM– 8:30 AM Breakfast
Get started bright and early! Castleton Kitchen staff (the sweetest kitchen staff in the universe) cooks us three meals a day, and we all eat together with new friends, faculty, staff, and visiting artists.
8:45 AM – 9:15 AM Community Meeting
We meet up and discuss the day, make announcements about awesome workshops, ideas for collaborations, information about the Parade, etc. It's like school assembly, but with more costumes and heavy metal interludes.
9:15 AM – 9:50 AM Chorus
We SING! Oh, yes you can! We all can! Especially when we have strength in numbers and get to stretch and jump and shout while we sing.
9:50 AM – 12:00 PM Morning Class
There are so many amazing classes to choose from! But you’ll pick just one for this morning session and stick with it for the two weeks, diving into the subject matter and exploring wherever it takes you. Class options are announced on the Sunday you arrive, and you’ll get a chance to meet every teacher for every class before making your choices. Of course you are welcome to take a class in a subject that you are already well versed in, but we HIGHLY encourage everyone to try a class in a subject that is totally new for you! Check out our CLASSES & OFFERINGS section to get a sense of what we've had in the past.
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM Lunch
More chow, more chat, more new artists to meet! Peruse the dessert bar??”
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
This time is yours for the taking! Some students and staff teach mini-workshops during this time, affectionately known as “one-o’clocks,” others use this time to rehearse or build things with friends and collaborators. Some of us take little naps in the sun, or simply play our guitars in the stairwell. Draw in a sketchbook, gab with our roommate, listen to music. You can do whatever you can dream up that takes under an hour, so that you can be on time for…
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM Afternoon Class
Afternoon class is the same as morning class except with a different teacher in a different subject… so, it’s not really the same!
Check out this video documenting the printmaking process, made by a 2012 student!
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Workshops / Specials
Another chunk of time to gather for workshops, projects, or puppet building (for the parade!). You might try a special workshop with visiting guest artists, write letters home, play soccer; its ‘free’ time that’s usually not free but rather chock full! This can also be a time for YOU to offer the community your skills, too! Students have offered workshops on everything from salsa dancing to henna to hypnosis to beatboxing. What can you share with us?
5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Dinner
Some more fuel for your artistic fire to keep you going through another epic day at GIA!
7:30 PM Artist Series
Each night at GIA we all gather for a performance or special event. Visual artists might present work from their sketchbooks, show finished work and talk about the creative process. Musicians might make us leap to our feet with their super funky jams. Performance artists might make us crack up or cry with their theatrics and verbage. Or, it might be YOU up on the stage one night, performing in the student show! Two weeks of incredible performances by local and international artists, (as well as you, your peers, your faculty and staff) across many disciplines. We hope these performances will open your eyes and inspire you. Plus, we have an excuse to dress up!!
10:00 PM Suite Check-in
It varies night to night how long the performances are, but there is usually a little extra time to hang out after the show (maybe have a quick poetry slam or an evening stroll to pick your faculty member’s brain about lighting gels or types of beadwork). But by 10:00 your darling RA will be expecting to see your shining face in your suite and preparing for bed (you can also always head to the suite before this). We use this timme to wind down, eat snacks, talk about our days, check in with our RA, brush teeth and get ready for…
10:30 PM Lights Out
We all pass out so we can get up early and do it all again!
